History North Neighborhood Library inhabited various storefronts until a regular branch was established in January 1926, at 53rd Street and Long Beach Boulevard, in the Marine Bank building. It opened with a book stock of 229 volumes. The current building at 5571 Orange Avenue opened on April 2, 1951. It was described as "an example of what can be accomplished when librarians, architects and the city engineer work closely at all stages of planning and construction." The building was of modern design and constructed with reinforced steel framing. North has a service population of over 99,000 residents, larger than surrounding cities with their own municipal libraries. North is heavily used by students and children, especially during the school year. North Neighborhood Library is named after the community which it serves, North Long Beach.
